Kraft promotes flavored water with "Sassy Gay Friend"

Kraft Foods is promoting Mio, it's new water flavoring product, with a character from Chicago's The Second City called "Sassy Gay Friend" in a series of online videos. It's quite a departure for Kraft, which is facing the threat of rising food prices. The joke in the viral videos involves famous scenes from various Shakespeare plays — such as Ophelia’s suicide in Hamlet, or the scene in Romeo and Juliet where Juliet is about to kill herself. The twist occurs when the “Sassy Gay Friend” unexpectedly enters the scenes and changes the outcome. Take a look for yourself. Definitely a departure from the typical family dinner-table tone you've come to expect from Kraft:

Product Shocker: Real Scorpion Suckers

I spotted these this weekend at the CNBC news store at the Philadelphia International Airport. A little Googling around revealed that they are, in fact, real scorpions (hence the name, I suppose). As one website puts it, "Yes, the scorpion is real and edible. No, it will not sting you. Insects are a major food source for much of the world's population. If you have never tried them, join in and expand your (or your friend's) culinary tastes."

Losing

Anyone who knows me knows I'm an American Idol fanatic. Last night we saw Kristy Lee Cook get voted off, and the suspense, drama, and emotion surrounding her departure far outweighed the celebration of David Cook's clear victory in his brave rendition of Mariah Carey's "Always Be My Baby."

Granted, there aren't any officially declared "winners" in the show until the end. It truly is survival of the fittest- or most vocal- or likeable (you decide).

But it begs the question... are we drawn to competition as a culture because we really are so invested and engaged in the process of the winner emerging, or is it really about seeing who is the last one not to lose?

Of course, this was the plane I was about to get on returning home from my last trip to New York.

I was in Manhattan visiting a friend recently, and in a Duane Reade (a popular Manhattan drug store), I spotted this finding: bags of chicken in an aisle. They weren't frozen or refrigerated... just sitting out in the open. Can anyone explain this?
