Maine: Fear Worked Again

Just like in California, fear and lies worked yesterday in Maine, when its citizens voted to prohibit gays and lesbians from having the right to access government-issued marriage licenses. Why do I stress that these marriage licenses are government issued? Because I believe there is an ongoing misperception that supporting equal marriage rights would imply that churches would be required to marry gay people. This couldn't be further from the truth, as churches can already choose not to marry whoever they like (and they do- many won't marry you if you aren't that religion, for instance). But perhaps the bigger misperception- and the one that sadly proved effective- is that allowing gay people to access these licenses somehow equates to corrupting children.
